10 for $10 Food Safety Stocking Stuffers

Food Safety Gadgets that are Dietitian Recommended and Dietitian Approved.

Stockings in our family traditionally are stuffed with 3 different types of goodies

  • From the Top: Sweets so as not to giveaway any hidden treasures

  • Tucked in In the Toe: precious miniatures (hint: Diamond Earring Studs)

  • Everything else: Items not on the stuffee’s list but that the stuffer (I’m open to better descriptors here) thought would be perfectly suited or ingeniously make life easier.

This year, instead of window shopping, I sought stocking stuffer inspiration elsewhere. I reached out to my registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) contacts and asked for their suggestions. Within 72 hours, I received so many great ideas, I decided to narrow the list to 10, including of course, those that would be on the Food Safety Dietitian’s wishlist criteria: to prevent food poisoning, reduce food waste, keep food and food handlers, safe.

Here’s how I decided what made the short list:

  • Fit in a stocking even if some rolling and ribboning required

  • A great gadget that supports food safety, even if in an imaginative way.

  • $10 price range

The 2nd most fun thing about creating this list was learning about new products I had never used or considered. If making the selections was 2nd, what was 1st? Clicking the web sites of the RDNs who shared their suggestions. Check those out as you shop.

oxo good grips cake tester keepsafe food safety stocking stuffer shopping guide to prevent food poisoning

Because baking dietitians know baking to the right temperature is as basic to food safety as baking at the right temperature is to producing a quality confection.

Reminder here: flour is a raw food. Nibbling raw dough (a losing battle, but still a worthy one) is unsafe, not only because of the eggs, but also because of the flour. Use a thermometer for safety and a cake tester for quality. Both are much more reliable than a toothpick.

Thanks to Amy Gorin Nutrition for this suggestion and engaging nutrition messages on just about everything!

Stainless lasts long, like forever. These measuring cups don’t fly around inside the dishwasher and don’t fray over time. I have ditched many plastic sets over the years but still have a stainless set that are so well worn, that the engraved measurements are faded.
