That Won’t Fall off the Side of the Sink

This is my 3rd attempt at a sponge holder for the kitchen sink. One that keeps the sponge handy, allows it to air dry, drains into the sink and doesn’t fall off with the slightest bump. The flexibility and the simplicity of the Umbra ended my search. Lesson Learned: DON’T TRUST ANY GADGET with SUCTION CUPS. They require an engineer’s effort to reattach. The Umbra may not be gorgeous but its practicality is.

What’s the safety benefit?

A sponge that drains and dries harbors less bacteria.

While we’re on the topic of sponges… Sanitize your sponge with your dishwasher runs. This basket is marketed for washing baby bottles, but it’s perfect for holding lightweight items, like sponges that could fly around and create havoc.

Obvious. to protect agains hot spills. Also, once you’ve cleaned chili cheese queso from your trunk, you’ll wish you’d bought these yesterday.

My microwave is above eye level. A very dangerous situation. I didn’t plan this arrangement, I inherited the layout. If food overflows when reheating, it can spill all over and I can’t see it when lifting it out.

What’s the safety benefit?

This mat captures the spills, which makes it much easier to clean. Also, if the dish overheats, I can wrap the mat around it when removing it to protect my hands from burns.

Why this set? Because these are food safe. Especially helpful for beverage paraphernalia. I’ve used them for everything from cleaning wine stoppers to reusable straws to insulated water bottles.

What’s the safety benefit?

Moisture in hard to reach crevasses is an ideal spot for bacteria to grow. Wash and dry before storing them in your cupboard so they’ll be safe the next time you use them.

OK, I know the elbow length gloves protect your arms from brushes with the oven rack but I find them so bulky that they don’t fit in my small kitchen drawers. So if I can’t reach them, I don’t use them. These are stashed right next to the oven and I use them all the time.

What’s the safety benefit?

I prefer mitts to potholders because they grip and don’t slip and cover your entire hand.

You never have to memorize or guess at what the safe temperature should be. It’s right there before your eyes

NEVER use a mandoline slicer without wearing cut resistant gloves. NEVER shuck mussels without cut resistant gloves.

I owe at least 2 fingertips and 1 intact thumb to these gloves.
